Seeds Are Falling in Miami

Only four of top ten seeds remain at NASDAQ-100 Open
March 29, 2005

The best in men's tennis have been battling it out in Key Biscayne, Florida this past week at the NASDAQ-100 Open. It's only halfway through the tournament and four of the top six seeds have already been ousted. The latest to fall was the fourth seed and last year's runner-up Guillermo Coria. He joins second seed Andy Roddick, third seed Marat Safin and fifth seed Carlos Moya. American Taylor Dent played the role of spoiler for the second straight tournament, defeating Coria in the third round as the No.31 seed. This is following his ousting of Marat Safin two weeks ago in Indian Wells. Dent will now meet Germany's unseeded Florian Mayer. Another highlighted fourth round match-up sees No.9 seed Andre Agassi squaring off with No.7 Gaston Gaudio of Argentina.

Top seed Roger Federer has moved one step closer to capturing the title. The Swiss Megastar has been on a tear this season and is looking to capture his fifth title of 2005. He is set to meet No.18 Mario Ancic of Croatia in the fourth round. Quarterfinal action could see Federer meeting No.6 seed Tim Henman, as the Swiss is looking to capture his first singles title in Indian Wells. Defending champion and No2 seed Andy Roddick was forced to retire from his second round match. After dropping the first set and two visits to the trainer, the American threw in the towel half way through the second set, losing to Fernando Verdasco of Spain.

Daniel Nestor and doubles partner Mark Knowles of the Bahamas are also in Key Biscayne this week. The duo, seeded first, are set to face Spaniards Feliciano Lopez and Rafael Nadal in the final eight on Wednesday. Nestor and Knowles are vying for their second title in three years in Key Biscayne.

The best of the best in men's tennis are coming to Uniprix Stadium in Montreal as part of the Rogers Cup, presented by National Bank from August 6–14th.
