Federer Leads the Charge at the NASDAQ-100 Open

Swiss star continues 2005 domination

March 29, 2005

Roger Federer of Switzerland heads into the NASDAQ-100 Open as the top seeded player in the men's draw. Coming off of his title win last weekend in Indian Wells, Federer will now look to capture his fifth title of the season. Of the top players missing the most prominent is Lleyton Hewitt who recently pulled out of the event with a toe injury sustained last week in Indian Wells.

Though there will not be a repeat of last week's final, a possible semifinal match-up could see Federer squaring off with another top contender, American star Andre Agassi who has an outstanding history in Miami, winning the title six times out of eight finals. He is both the youngest and the oldest player to win the NASDAQ 100 Open title.

Seeded third in the draw, Australian Open Champion Marat Safin will be looking to bounce back from his performance at the Pacific Life Open, he was ousted in the third round by No.30 Taylor Dent. Hewitt's absence might also bode well for Andy Roddick, the American, seeded No.2 in Miami, was defeated by Hewitt in the semifinals in Indian Wells. A potential match-up could see the defending champion Roddick meeting up with young phenom Rafael Nadal of Spain in the third round.

Other top seeds in the main draw include Argentineans Guillermo Coria, David Nalbandian and Gaston Gaudio, Carlos Moya of Spain, Englishman Tim Henman and Joachim Johansson of Sweden.

The best of the best in men's tennis are coming to Uniprix Stadium in Montreal as part of the Rogers Cup, presented by National Bank from August 6–14th.
